I might not be posting much for a while. Allow me to explain...
As a writer, I have on occasion had to stop and ask myself, "Good Lord, what have I created?"I'm currently having one of those moments.
About 24 hours ago, I started toying with a story idea. It began with the premise of 'any given Tuesday'. Let's face it, outside of politics, Tuesdays are rarely exciting. The Monday blahs are over, the workweek has begun in earnest for most, and the clock is ticking away 'til the weekend. This was all well and good, until I started adding different elements to the thought of 'any given Tuesday'. That's when I let the weirdness in.
I would, if I honestly thought I could, give you an idea of the basic story - but I can't. It's weird. It's complex. It's multiple perspectives of singular events. Overall, it's a challenging exercise in determining identity. There. I've made it sound even weirder and undigestible than is necessary. That's just my brain working overtime.
I'll give myself credit for creating characters I think readers will, at some point, fully identify with. Or not. To say I've done so with a level of certainty would be like saying I understand the female mind. I don't. I can hazard an educated guess, but that, on my best day, is about it; a guess. I can say, with 100% confidence, that I'm currently creating characters I enjoy! I'm imbuing them with qualities I enjoy in others. I'm giving them flaws that I see in myself and others. This is not to say I've created Mikeworld. Far from it! I'm merely populating the story with interesting characters with entertaining quirks and traits.
What began as an idea slowly became a short story idea. Sometimes ideas make decisions I can't control, and they expand and grow. From short story to novella - it kept growing (in my head). And it keeps growing. Barring writing myself into a brick wall or plain ol' writer's block, this will become a full-length novel. All from one silly little idea. A thought exercise.
Never underestimate embryonic ideas. They can become great things. That said, and I don't think this is too much of a giveaway - never trust a squirrel.
